Institutional Coaching
Comprised of three key components:
Observation – We firmly believe the purpose of observing is to inform not to infer. To honor this and truly support the teacher’s ability to reflect and self-assess, we practice literal notes to record ONLY data that we observe.
Feedback – We promote teacher growth using the Six Steps of Feedback buttressed with the literal notes. In our practice we use this time to guide teachers into identifying their areas of strength and of growth and measurable action steps. The following observation will evaluate growth around action steps.
Coplanning and Coteaching – Coplanning is key to supporting teacher growth and at times, co-delivering some of those lessons has proven highly effective.
Curriculum Mapping
Having a sound curriculum is key to ensuring that teachers can do the job they were hired to do (instruct) not build and align lessons and assessments. We support teachers with prioritizing the lessons in a curriculum and using diagnostic data to identify learning gaps. To make the grade level lessons accessible, supplemental lessons and materials should be intentionally planned during this process.
Guided Lesson Planning
Two heads are better than one…something we often forget in the teaching world. Planning happens in silos to the detriment of the students. This is why ALCY Ed. believes in guided collaborative lesson planning. This is a pivotal practice that improves lessons and student mastery greatly. Often with Eureka it is suggested to plan by module and topic (rather than by week) in order to obtain maximum coherence.
Ongoing Professional Development
Consistent and ongoing professional development is key in keeping teachers refreshed in this work. We prescribe bi-weekly workshops that will target explicit teaching of and with the Mathematical Practices. These workshops serve as opportunities for teachers to practice concept development and delivery with colleagues before nailing down a lesson plan.
